London Midland

Days out by railway campaign

In September 2015 London Midland were ready to launch a brand new campaign, and I was approached initially just to fix some posters that weren’t working for the client. But I perceived quite significant problems I didn’t think could just be quickly solved, since they were trying to convey three messages at once with neither a hierarchy of information, nor an engaging, memorable idea. So I was offered a conceptual role, and within a month I had to rise to the challenge and produce a brand new concept to pitch to them. Fortunately the big cheeses invested their millions in my idea.

The three words, Your Social Network, root the campaign in the destinations with truth at the centre of the messages; the reason people want to travel is to see friends & family. Since there had to be three destinations and prices on most of the materials, the three simple words of the headline would convey the main idea as efficiently as possible, and let the images do the rest of the talking. It’s not groundbreaking, but it solved the problem, and I turned it around in record time based on little experience of doing this before.

I was working for a small agency, and so I also subsequently headed up a rebranding of their external communications and updated their brand guidelines. Here are examples from the campaign.

Project involved

— Planning and directing a photoshoot

Out-of-home advertising

These are early examples from development

People sitting together, holding cups of tea or coffee, with their legs and feet visible, in a cozy setting.
A billboard advertisement showing three smiling young adults enjoying skincare or cosmetic products in a store, with a colorful background of shelves full of various bottles and jars. The ad promotes social networking and leisure activities in London at a cost of £22.

48-sheets were a significant part of the media-buying

Large digital billboard on a modern building displaying the words "Your Social Network" with an image of a boy and a woman interacting, and the text "london midland" beneath.

A grey day in Birmingham, brightened with a very large "media eye" at the entrance to New Street station. I made storyboards and created all the visual materials for this animated digital ad with After Effects.

A happy family of three, including a young boy, an adult man, and an older man, outdoors during autumn, surrounded by yellow leaves. The older man is holding a yellow leaf while the others watch and smile.
Two women smiling and walking together, with a magazine cover overlay promoting retail therapy services in Liverpool, London, and Watford.
Two women smiling with umbrellas, advertising travel offers in London, Birmingham, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Liverpool, with text about deals and social network promotion.

Of course I wanted a bit of taxi memorabilia to keep…
